313 - Education and the deaf

-

Today I want to talk about the topic of education in general, but with a clearly defined objective .

I want to say that today is aimed specifically at parents of deaf children in an effort to locate the point of view of deaf people who have overcome with effort and pride, the communication barrier that impeded the achievement of higher education.

'm profoundly deaf, I hear absolutely nothing, but I have tried to read lips to go into the system and adapt to contemporary society.

is true that I found, throughout my life, many problems associated with lack of understanding of a part of society that looked, at that time, the deaf person as something of difficult social integration.

Today, that concept, which is of the deaf today's society, it tends to disappear but there are still some who do not think so, and the ability of the deaf is, little by little more than demonstrated.

I do not mean those that are deaf late in life, accident, illness or senility, as this class have had their hearing impaired, hearing before receiving a complete education, as many as formal, informal or not formal. Another thing is the level attained in the same upbringing.

speak of the deaf who are by birth or by aquires deafness during childhood and therefore have not had the opportunity to learn through oral communication.

There are reasons, but confirmed that the majority of deaf people today, who are past middle age, type of education are severed with they have been living in a "closed world", away almost entirely of society in general and posture, widespread among them, not to accept integration.

respect that position because it is not possible to do something beneficial for them. If you are as happy in their limited "ghetto" ... let them.

This radical stance with regard to society in general, has been promoted directly or indirectly, in most cases by the family of the deaf to what we mean.

Most deaf relatives (parents, siblings, children, etc.) Have been, and continue to see, the deaf to be impaired difficult exit, especially in rural areas and this has led to a very large majority of the deaf, middle-age and older, lack of basic studies and do not know understand correctly a sentence, both written and spoken.

I will now explain a little history.

After the English Civil War (1936-1939), the Franco regime concluded that the deaf were substandard and could not integrate into society as other citizens. This paternalistic unaware
did emerge a number of schools run by religious (nuns) who welcomed the children became deaf and deaf.
These nuns were not professional educators or any other branch and created their own system of teaching the deaf, based on most subjects in religious matters. They used to
pupils to do the tasks that correspond to raised and made them lose a lot of time without teaching anything but religious themes.
spent their time between sentences and rudimentary lessons they definitely went deaf school at age 14 ...
They wrote and still write all with the same pattern and in a rather precarious. Some left unable to read or write, in the sense of interpreting the reading. Later
were created special schools for deaf, that most students learned to speak and write basic way without reaching higher levels of learning and not basic arts and crafts (carpentry, tailoring, masonry, etc.)..
With the "boom" of democracy, and deeply rooted and it began to create inclusive schools in which deaf students included a variety of other disabilities.
Today, there is still a poor understanding of the teaching but there are some schools where deaf students are fully integrated with the audience, but with the handicap that sign language is their main means of communication. It

certain expectations of education of the deaf, is improving day by day, but with the interference of family members and others in the life of the deaf, condition them to remain limited in their development, while taking initiative, these family members and others, leaving the deaf.

But it hurts garments, stated that most family members and others who say work selflessly with the deaf, just doing it to have a means to make money through them and over believe that, with his performance, offset to deaf people in all levels of "his" life.

One of the problems easy to solve is one in which hearing family members and others who enter the world of the deaf, take the lead in joint decisions (sometimes without informing the deaf themselves) and become mentors and representatives of the same without being a true professional and believe that with endocultura can find solutions to the problems of the deaf ...

The solution to the previous paragraph is that the authorities responsible for the issue of education, employment and social development of deaf people, prohibiting the participation of untrained professionally and without official titles . In the same sense that a doctor may not exercise without proper title.
Just ask the parents of children deaf school age to abide earnestly to inculcate the values that the Ministry of Education provides to all citizens, only this, and accept no educational or social conditions not approved formally.

Today there are many listeners who are entered in the field of deaf people (even in his private life) without being properly qualified professional.

Most of these people come to do sign language courses taught by deaf people, lack of education, who have no idea of the educational system and thus make classes with so many limitations and their inability to read and write.

This class of people view the deaf as inferior, a signal receiver inane, easily transmitted with what they believe to have fulfilled his duty. Mentors are erected, unsolicited, to the deaf. Impose their own view of the deaf and plugging him that they have reason to be listening.

All this without being a professional in any industry and studies, nearly all these people, who fail high school. These

hearing people (family members or friends of the deaf) come to exercise full control in the organizations representing the deaf dressed in the uniform of the innocent unselfish collaboration. Actually look for opportunities to earn easy money.
A very recent example:

A foundation created by companies, made a call to financially assist new entrepreneurs.

The first condition imposed was that in that call could only be deaf people, which were directed specifically ls aid.

hearing people did not accept or representatives of the deaf.

However, a hearing person claiming to be representative of a Catalan association, managed to sneak into the call and took almost all the attention with their questions ... the leaders of the Foundation said to him that this call was directed only to persons deaf and that she did not look anything there ...

Some time later, I asked a deaf member of the association who claimed to be representative of that person listener, if he knew anything about the call for aid for entrepreneurs deaf ... was totally stunned, nobody had talked about that topic.

This is a very clear example of the behavior of those who say work "selflessly" to the deaf.

Collaboration, albeit with the palm of your hand up waiting for the appropriate financial compensation, and without professional or collegial be no Official College (as the College of Physicians, Association of Architects, Association of Journalists, etc. ) and with rudimentary knowledge Schools that do not serve any purpose.
