THE ASSOCIATION OF THE DEAF OF GIPUZKOA CELEBRATES ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY
The poster commemorating its 50 anniversary, the organization sums up his career with a "sleight of hand" that reflects the importance of sign language for this group. FOUNDERS
Started in 1961
The first objective was to find a place, so the founders rented a room for their first meetings. Soon Burgalés Center was established, a "small" bar where you began to hold sporting events, because "once there was no custom of organizing cultural activities now," say the members of the association. Gradually, the number of partners increased and began to include cultural activities: food contests, championship mus, theater.
Currently, the group has 240 members, 20 of them in San Sebastian and the rest from different municipalities in Gipuzkoa.
One of the remaining subjects in the educational system, they say, is the ability to study sign language.
The association has successfully adapted to the characteristics of the rest of society and, in 2009, saw the need to reorganize as a result of its expansion. "We currently operate in flowchart form. There is a board that is responsible for coordinating all activities, but below there are various committees that deal with particular issues."
